BlackBerry is down for the count, but it may just be getting back on its feet. After releasing its much-anticipated — and long overdue — Z10 smartphone earlier this year, BlackBerry confirmed plans this week to integrate its popular messaging service with iOS and Android this summer. [Read more]

OMG! What’s up with all the brain-twisting acronyms in mobility today? We were asking ourselves that recently while discussing COPE, a hot new trend in enterprise mobility. To ease our — and your — pain we decided a primer was in order, stat. So here are the most common acronyms in enterprise mobility, translated into an words we all can understand. [Read more]

Dan Miller, founder of and senior analyst at Opus Research, is a top expert on voice biometrics. He spoke with us recently about the growing popularity of personal virtual assistants on mobile devices and how they will forever alter the way customers get service and employees go about their jobs (hint: imagine ‘listening’ to your email and dictating a reply). [Read more]

Digital marketers looking for a better way to measure their ROI might want to think back to a lesson from their elementary school days. I’m talking about the Scientific Method, the eight-step method of inquiry that we all used on countless chemistry and science projects. It turns out to be a pretty effective tool for digital marketers too — if you’re willing to tap back into those scientific roots.
As smart marketers know, marketing isn’t a one-way conversation anymore — it’s a constant dialogue with consumers across the channels they care about most. That is why in today’s environment cross-channel marketing has become a necessity. This is what Responsys Interact 2013 is all about. [Read more]

Hiring, training, evaluating, and retaining the right people constitute a huge chunk of any company’s ethical fiber — and it all starts with human resources. That’s because human resources embodies the tools that shape the ever-elusive buzz-phrase “corporate culture.” [Read more]

David Ikenberry: Redefining Business Ethics 101

When David Ikenberry, dean of the Leeds School of Business at Colorado University, argued in BusinessWeek last year that business schools need to rethink how they teach ethics, an unexpected reader — Andrew Fastow, the convicted former chief financial officer of Enron — reached out to ask if he might offer Leeds students some of his personal lessons from the experience. Ikenberry took him up on the offer, and continues to call for other innovations in how to “teach” good ethics. [Read more]

Does Your Company Need a Mobile Code of Ethics?

What employees do with their devices all day can cross all kinds of lines — from compliance and legal to basic common sense. And it can pose serious risks for employers and compliance officers. How does an organization establish simple but effective rules of mobile behavior to hedge these emerging risks? Culled from a handful of expert sources, here are a few other grounding principles: [Read more]

Brace yourself: the day is fast-approaching when your smartphone or tablet serves as much more than a device for communication, work and entertainment. It will be a remote control of sorts that manages every machine around you — from your car to the office coffee maker to the screens you use for presentations. Cooler yet, these devices will all be talking to each other. [Read more]

Savvy marketers understand the secret to success in the digital age: consumers are in control — of the messages they receive, how they receive them and when they receive them. Companies that get this new concept are engaging consumers across the channels they use almost simultaneously every day — from email and mobile to social and the web.
3 Rules of Marketing to the Always-on Generation

For many companies, their audience is Generation Y, which represents both their current (and future) customers, so smart engagement with those Millennials now can yield invaluable loyalty later on. But their brains function differently than their parents’: Short and sweet is the way to market to these folks. Marketers, then, need to trim down and tailor their message. [Read more]

The modern workplace is all about being “flat” — that is, eliminating the hierarchies, job titles, and traditional corner offices more associated with the Industrial Age than the Digital Age. But while many employees thrive in the egalitarian culture of a flat organization, others who are more familiar with the promotions, titles and other perquisites of a vertical workplace worry about a potential drawback: their own career advancement. [Read more]

Scott Molinari, general manager of Adduco Digital e.K. in Zweibrücken, Germany, took issue with OnForce CEO Peter Cannone‘s analysis about contract-hiring trends in the field service sector.
Drones are known for their military service, not field service. But that could soon change. A New Zealand-based electricity distributor, Counties Power, is reportedly looking into the use of drones, a.k.a. unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) for emergency repairs. When power poles and telephone lines are damaged, the need for a rapid response is critical. [Read more]

Marketers: Ignore Customer Preferences at your Own Peril

Companies that don’t listen to their customers don’t stay in business for long. Paying attention to what customers have to say isn’t a matter of simply being attuned to their product or service needs. It means establishing a two-way conversation with them in a way that they are truly heard. [Read more]

Short Message Services (SMS or texts) face the one major hurdle: mobile users typically dislike any message that’s unsolicited or, worse, completely unrelated to anything the user might want or need. So therein lies the quandary: SMS should be an integral part of any marketer’s cross-channel strategy, but how do you start an SMS conversation that pays off? [Read more]

Today’s field service technician must be adept at a variety of skills — sales included. We spoke with sales expert Mark Synek, a principal at sales and marketing consultancy Sales Benchmark Index and former VP of sales at Cintas, about how to get everyone at the company on board with the tech-turned-salesperson trend — and why technicians are often in the best position to sell.
How many field technicians does it take to service, say, a hospital CT scanner, or HVAC equipment in a high-rise? A surprisingly large number of field service organizations don’t really know. According to Aberdeen Group, 17 percent of service firms don’t measure or aren’t even aware of their “first-time fix” performance rate. [Read more]

How can marketers keep customers engaged, regardless of where they are in the sales cycle? Neil Cohen, marketing VP at Visage, spoke with Holmes Report this week about how Visage has shortened sales cycles through its content marketing work with Original9 — in particular, its showcase blog, Chief Mobility Officer.

“Its about staying in engaged and continuing the relationship without pushing the close,” says Cohen of the strategy behind the blog. “Already the blog accounts for two-thirds of our website traffic and, on average, 20 percent of people who visit the website from the blog are real prospects.” Cohen calls out his primary motivations for turning to content marketing:

Relationship Building

“I didn’t want out salespeople to have to ask customers if they were ready to sign a contract in follow-up. I wanted them to be able to say ‘Hey, remember that conversation we had around legal ramifications of BYOD? You might appreciate this post on it.’”

Elevating the Conversation

“Over the last few years, conversations around mobility were all about security. That’s not a conversation. The questions to ask are: how will mobility make your more competitive – or more productive? The content should elevate the conversation.”

“I work with Original9 Media for ‘Chief Mobility Officer’ and SparkPR for PR. ‘Chief Mobility Officer’ and my PR budget are my biggest spend. It’s a low-six figure investment, so you don’t need to be too crazy. It just has to be right and on strategy.”

A job interview over Skype isn’t such a crazy idea these days — in fact, it’s become a norm in many company’s hiring processes.
When it comes to marketing, companies too often focus on promoting their products but neglect to highlight their services. We spoke with Joe Crisara, a longtime service contractor and CEO of ContractorSelling, about why marketing must be the No. 1 priority of every service organization. [Read more]

Quiet, Yes, But Introverts Can Be Your Best Performers

Introverts are a misunderstood bunch. They’re often seen as shy with too few ideas, and can have trouble fitting into today’s workplace. But just because they’re not calling out ideas or showing up at happy hour doesn’t mean they’re not valuable team players or future business leaders. [Read more]

While some organizations are considered “tall,” or “vertical” with rigid hierarchies, multiple management layers and explicit lines of responsibility, others prefer a “flat,” or “horizontal,” giving employees more responsibility in the company’s success.
